Grandmother's Stories

"...and the bamboo wove itself."

This print was made at Arizona State University during the printmaking residency, Map(ing) 2015. I applied three different printing methods including: copper etching, inkjet printing and collagraph. Each of the twenty-five prints have a hand woven element with my photography of Ireland, Thailand, and Chile. The print is based on a dream that I had in Pai, Thailand. The day before the dream I was in the northwest region of Thailand with a hill tribe. I spent the day trekking to a waterfall. When we arrived to our destination, the guide peeled and split bamboo for us to weave a basket. He wove a traditional basket form his hill tribe and I made a Chitimacha basket. I had never made a basket from bamboo, only paper. Our natural weaving material is Rivercane, which is of the bamboo family. This was my first experience of weaving with the source material. That night we slept in a woven house in the hill tribe community. The next night I had a dream of bamboo sprouting from the ground and growing quickly, twisting and turning itself into a basket. It was alive with knowledge and memory and the bamboo wove itself.

Shortly after the print residency (April 2015) I created a large weaving onsight at the Hardesty Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The three panel piece is a much larger version of the print, "...and the bamboo wove itself." I drew the bamboo growing from the bottom of the Arches watercolor paper and covered the top of the piece with text from my grandmother's stories that she shared with me. The archival injet prints on bamboo and rice paper are then woven through the drawing to create the 96" x 144" piece.

I did an on-sight weaving that is 96" x 144" titled, Her Story, Our Legacy. The weaving is of digital photographs on bamboo and rice paper, woven through water color paper that has pen and ink of bamboo weaving itself and my Grandmother's stories handwritten. The paper is covered in wax. There are three panels 96" x 48" each, that hang side-by-side.
